2018 Golf Season

The 2018 golf season has come to a close across Manitoba and what a year it was. I have not posted on here since writing about my new position in Minnedosa and that speaks to the type of season it was, BUSY.  Most of Manitoba, including Minnedosa was blessed and cursed with great weather this season. The dry hot weather meant minimal rain days and a lot more time to golf. It also created a challenging environment for our maintenance staff to handle but Dan Bailey and his staff came through. Conditions at Minnedosa Golf & Country Club came a long way from the extremely dry 2017 to a point in the fall where the greens were rolling amazing, fairways...

The Next Step

In my career I have been fortunate enough to learn from a number of knowledgable individuals in the golf business that have helped me grow as a professional and have supported me along the way. I have also had the pleasure of spending eight seasons at a fantastic facility such as Shilo Country Club. My ninth season in the golf industry will be a very exciting and different one for myself as it will not commence at the Shilo Country Club this spring. This decision was not as easy as some might think as there is a wide range of emotions that come with leaving a club and family that I have known for the better part of a decade. The staff,...

2017 Golf Season

The 2017 golf season has now come to a close. I now have time to sit back, reflect on the season and look ahead to 2018. This year was my 8th season at the Shilo Country Club, 7th as a professional, teaching all over western Manitoba, and a year I will always remember on a personal level but I will get to that later.  ShiloCC had a much busier season than last with one of the best years of weather that I can remember, with the exception of some wind days that conveniently fell on tournament days. We introduced two new events to our club tournament list. The first was the SCC Ryder Cup which featured teams of two golfers...

Spirit Sands Golf Club

Destination Golf has become an extremely popular trend in the golf world as of late. Mike Keiser being the man at the forefront of this movement with his properties of Bandon Dunes, Cabot Links/Cliffs and recently Sand Valley. These properties feature multiple golf courses, all of which are considered some of the best in the world. This is not a new trend but it is has been gaining in popularity. Golf havens such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst have been around for decades and in a time when golf is apparently "dying" these resorts are investing in their product and expanding or remodelling. The reason? Destination golf is in high demand. Could Manitoba become a golfing destination? Crazy thought right?...

GlenboroG&CC

Recently, while reading the blog post of golf course shaper and architect Riley Johns, I stumbled across a picture of Glenboro Golf and Country Club. The photo was part of a collection of Riley's favorite golf courses he got a chance to play in 2016 and included courses such as Pinehurst No.2, SandhillsGC and Banff Springs to name a few. All of these golf courses are featured near the top of every list of best golf courses in the United States, Canada and the World. So, one can imagine my amazement when a photo of our GlenboroG&CC appeared in the album. "This 9 holer in the middle of Manitoba was the biggest surprise of 2016. It has been around since...
